Smart Edit: add or remove area with AI

Fix an area with clicks instead of dragging points: click inside to trim a spur, click a pocket to absorb it, or draw one line to cut or fill, then press Enter to save.

An area is usually nearly right. Smart Area's fill leaked through a door swing, or a hand-drawn polygon missed an alcove. Smart Edit corrects that with a click instead of a point-by-point drag. It reads the walls on the plan, so a trim cuts along the wall and across the doorway, not wherever the shape happens to pinch.

Open an area for editing

Two ways in, the same tool once you're there:

  • Straight after a Smart Area pick. The room you click is staged and the banner already reads Smart Edit. Correct it, then press Enter. See Smart Area.
  • On any saved area, hand-drawn or AI. With Move, right-click the area and choose Smart Edit, or press E while the menu is open. The banner reads Smart Edit · Adjust the area if needed. with the keys Enter to save · Esc to cancel.

The corrections use the plan's own lines, so the area needs a vector PDF under it.

Correct with a click

Every correction is a click in space. Before you click, the part that would change is hatched under the cursor, and the cursor label says what the click does.

  • Click inside the area on a part that shouldn't be there, such as the hallway the fill leaked into. The label reads Click to remove. The spur is cut off along the wall.
  • Click outside the area in an enclosed space that touches it, such as a closet the fill missed. The label reads Click to add. The pocket is absorbed.
  • Click inside a cutout to take that void back into the area.

If nothing is hatched the click won't change anything. Where the two verbs can't be told apart yet, the label reads Click to add or remove.

Press ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows) to undo the last correction while the area is still open.

Draw a line to cut or fill

When there is no wall for the click to follow, draw the line yourself.

  1. Move the cursor onto the area's outline. The label reads Click to start a line and the banner reads Click two points to cut or fill the area.
  2. Click the first point, then move to the other side. The label reads Click to finish.
  3. Click again. A line across the area cuts off the smaller side; a line outside it, from outline to outline, fills the space it closes.

With Snap on, the line locks to the same angles as any two-click line on the canvas. See Snapping and trace-free takeoff.

Save or throw it away

  • Press Enter to save. A Smart Area pick becomes a new section; an existing area is written back with its name, class and place in the takeoff unchanged.
  • Press Esc to drop every change and keep the area as it was.

After saving, one ⌘Z undoes the whole edit in one step. See Edit takeoffs: copy, undo and delete.

If something goes wrong

  • Nothing to trim here. The click landed inside the area but not on a spur the walls define. Try closer to the doorway, or draw a line.
  • That space isn't enclosed. The pocket is open on one side, so there is no boundary to fill to.
  • That space doesn't touch the area. It's a separate room. Pick it with Smart Area instead.
  • That line doesn't cut the area. Move an end. Both ends of your line are on the same side.
  • Couldn't save. The area may have been deleted. Someone else removed it while you were editing. Check the Takeoff tab.
  • Smart Edit isn't in the menu, or is greyed out. The shape is a cutout, a measurement or an area that hasn't finished saving, or your plan doesn't include Smart Edit. See Plankore plans.
  • Nothing hatches wherever I hover. The sheet has no vector linework. Edit the points by hand instead; see Edit takeoffs: reshape, add/remove points.
