Apply a template

Drag an assembly or part onto a takeoff object, fill in its inputs, check the preview and apply it, then see the priced parts under the object and in Estimates.

Applying a template attaches an assembly or a single part to something you've measured. Plankore reads the object's area, length or count, runs the formulas and adds the priced parts to your estimate. New to templates? Start with Templates and libraries.

Three ways to start

  • Drag from the Templates panel. Open the Templates tab in the right sidebar and drag a template onto an object row in the Takeoff tab, onto the shape on the canvas, or onto a row in Estimates. Drag an assembly to apply all of it, or expand it and drag one part.
  • Right-click a count group. In the Takeoff tab, right-click a count object and choose Apply library template.
  • Copy from another object. When you split or merge objects that have assemblies, Plankore asks which ones to carry over. See Edit takeoffs: merge, split, move and assign.

Fill in the picker

Whichever way you start, the apply picker opens, titled Apply followed by the template's name.

  1. If you opened the picker from a count group, search with Search templates... and pick a template. Rows show the name, System template or My template, and a version number like v2.
  2. Answer the inputs, grouped by part. Required fields must be filled in. Fields with a default show Default: and the value, so you can leave them alone. Read-only rows show Computed or Not set. Rarely changed fields sit under Advanced inputs.
  3. If the template applies to a segment, pick one under Select one segment. Plankore highlights each segment on the canvas as you hover.
  4. Check the preview. It lists the parts and quantities the template will produce for this object.
  5. Click Apply Assembly, or Apply Object when you dragged a single part.

Compatibility

Every template is written for one kind of measurement, and the badge on its row in the Templates panel says which. Apply an area template to a length and the picker warns you: Compatibility is checked when you apply. The quantity then comes from whatever the object can supply, such as its point count, so check the preview. The apply can also fail with This Area template can only be applied to an Area takeoff. Select an Area source or choose a compatible template.

What you'll see afterwards

  • In the Takeoff tab, the object gets a chevron. Expand it to see the applied assembly and each part. Right-click a part and choose Properties to see its Definition, Pricing, Input Data and formulas, and to change an input or a price. See Template inputs and formulas.
  • In Estimates, the object's Cost / unit cell reads via templates. Expand the row to see one priced line per part. See Build an estimate.

You can apply more than one template to the same object. Each one adds its own assembly under the object.

Remove an applied template

  1. In the Takeoff tab, expand the object and right-click the assembly.
  2. Choose Remove.
  3. Confirm in the dialog, Remove "[name]"?. It explains that the applied assembly and its pricing are removed from this object, and that your template in the library is not deleted.

If something goes wrong

  • A field shows "Required". Fill it in and click Apply Assembly again.
  • "This Segment template needs one selected Area or Linear segment." Pick a segment under Select one segment. If the list is empty, close the picker and drag again.
  • Applying a single part fails. Click Apply whole assembly instead. Parts inside an assembly often depend on each other.
  • "This estimate changed while a template version was applied." Someone else edited the project at the same time. Click Reload estimate and try again.
  • "Shapes are still saving, try again in a moment." Wait for the control bar to read Saved, then drop the template again.
